From Albania to the United States: A PhD Journey in Medicinal Chemistry

AlbPhD Circle is proud to celebrate Dr. Vanisa Petriti on the completion of her PhD in Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy in 2026.

Vanisa’s doctoral research focused on biocatalysis, substrate engineering, and natural product biosynthesis, exploring how enzymes can be used as powerful and sustainable tools for chemical synthesis. Her work investigated cytochrome P450 enzymes and, in particular, the marine-derived enzyme Bmp7, which can catalyze the formation of carbon–carbon bonds to produce halogenated biaryl compounds from simpler building blocks.

By studying how Bmp7 performs these complex chemical reactions, her research provided important mechanistic insights into the capabilities of natural enzymes and contributed to the broader development of greener, enzyme-based approaches for synthesizing molecules relevant to pharmaceutical research and drug discovery.

Beyond her research, Vanisa was actively involved in graduate student leadership, mentoring, recruitment, and outreach within the University of Florida College of Pharmacy, contributing to the academic community beyond the laboratory.

Her PhD journey also represents a deeply personal achievement. Moving from Albania to pursue her education in the United States, Vanisa describes reaching this milestone as the result of many years of dedication, as well as the support of her family, mentors, colleagues, and friends. Reflecting on her graduation, Vanisa emphasizes that the experience gave her much more than a degree, it brought lifelong friendships, valuable lessons, a deeper appreciation for science, and gratitude for the people who supported her along the way.
